![]() ![]() And guess what? In the end, I was an NC after all – NC15 in Studio Fix Fluid, to be exact. I went through this routine many times – getting an almost match, and then going back again (NW15 was workable, but had a somewhat dulling effect). Back it went, which is just as well, because as it turns out, I hate the finish of Mineralize Moisture Foundation (too dewy). Then I tried it on again at home, and it was wrong. I was so ecstatic to have finally found my match, I told everyone I knew the exciting (* cough* boring * cough*) news! I posted it on Facebook, on Instagram, I messaged my friends, I told my sister about it – really, any captive audience I could find. The first MAC employee I met with matched me as NW20 in MAC Mineralize Moisture Foundation. I did not, and have never, brawled with a MAC employee. Determined to know my true match was, I went back to MAC and asked for a rematch. Not long after that epiphany, I went through the arduous process of finding my match in Kat Von D’s Lock-it Tattoo foundation, and it was this process that helped realize that I was definitely not NC25. A lot of them were neutral, and some of them were actually cool. And then one day it occurred to me: most of my foundations were not straightforwardly warm. Over the years, I amassed quite the foundation collection, and I’d found my perfect match for nearly all of them. My skin did have plenty of visible yellow in it, after all. But the girl who matched me told me my skin tone was straightforwardly warm, and I believed her. I couldn’t quite pinpoint it at the time, and assumed that I must just not like MAC’s foundation formula. I was not as knowledgeable about foundation back then, but I do remember feeling that it looked off. Years ago, I was matched as an NC25 in MAC’s Studio Fix Fluid Foundation. MAC Matchmaster Shade Intelligence Compact, $36.On the left is NC15, right is NW13 in MAC Studio Fix Fluid. Dry skin, normal skin, or oily skin? You know what to do. Want the same even coverage that a foundation provides? Try this. Don’t like looking like you’re wearing makeup? Try this. The bottom line is MAC’s 12-shade-range Matchmaster is the kind of product that seems to cater to virtually everyone. My oily skin loved it, but I have a hunch that dry skin will love it, too. That doesn’t mean your skin doesn’t feel moisturized, though - quite the opposite, thanks to a dose of sodium hyaluronate, otherwise known as a super-hydrating compound. Matchmaster is different from many cushion compacts in that it leaves a satin finish on skin - most cushion compacts lean more dewy. (This is good, though I always found myself overwhelmed with the amount of product that gushed from Lancôme’s.) Unlike Lancôme’s cushion compact, which arrived last year, MAC’s holds a smaller amount of liquid. You may need to tap the sponge over splotchy areas a few times to get just the right amount of coverage, but that’s how “buildable coverage” works. It’s thin - watery, almost - but covers spots and pimples extraordinarily well. MAC’s formula appears virtually invisible on skin. After patting your face with the puff, you’ll ideally see a complexion that’s even, smooth, and moisturized. A small bit of the formula seeps up from the sponge and onto the puff. For the uninitiated, here’s how you use a cushion compact: You take the round puff included with the compact and dip it into the compact’s formula-soaked sponge. All of the usual components are involved: a sponge saturated with a BB-cream-like liquid, a circular puff to dispense the formula all over your face, and an air-tight lid so the liquid doesn’t dry out. Introduced late last year, MAC’s Matchmaster Shade Intelligence Compact is the brand’s response to the Korean cushion-compact trend. I was, to be frank, unimpressed - that is, until MAC’s entry changed my mind. It’s different, kind of weird, but definitely cool! everyone concluded. It’s like a BB cream but better! most wrote. When the Western beauty market became awash in cushion compacts about a year ago, it seemed like no one could stop talking about them. MAC’s Matchmaster Shade Intelligence Compact
